Cut flowers on graves sees the underscoring of the brevity of life in the failure to recognise the irony of severing flowers from their roots, effectively killing them, to adorn the resting place of the dead. Just as common is the practice of placing potted flowering plants on graves. Whilst in full bloom upon placement, they are usually discarded, often pots and all, once their petals begin to fall and their fertile prettiness wanes. The inherent tragedy of such a disposable regard for the natural world speaks of the extent to which we are disinterred from the natural environment and ecological concerns at large. Cemetery dumps, bins and skips regularly yield a bounty of flowers, plants, trees, shrubs and grasses clinging desperately to life by their roots. I have begun challenging this pernicious environmental shortsightedness by salvaging flora from certain demise by attempting to revive them to fruitful and flowering health. And usually in the flowerpots that were their prospective coffins.
This project expands upon my explorations of memorial culture through graveside ornamentation.
